Water testing is an important, but often overlooked part of aquarium care. Regular testing of the most important water quality parameters will ensure perfect water quality and healthy livestock. Most community fish are relatively tolerant of a wide range of conditions but colour, vitality, activity and growth levels are all influenced by water quality. Regular testing can also spot adverse trends so that action can be taken before a real problem develops. It is recommended that for fish health pH, Nitrite and Nitrate be tested every few weeks. In order to reduce algae problems again test for Nitrate and also Phosphate. Iron and Carbon Dioxide levels are important for lush plant growth  and Carbonate hardness levels will influence the Ph.
